Having a tooth removed doesn't have to be overwhelming when you know what to expect and how to care for yourself afterward for a smooth recovery.

Today, we'll share some tips and instructions on how to make your recovery process smooth, effective, and comfortable.

Immediately After Surgery

When your surgery is completed, we'll have you bite down on gauze to control the bleeding. It's best to head home and plan on resting and relaxing for the remainder of the day.

You'll be able to manage your pain with over-the-counter or prescription medication, depending on your needs.

Sticking to soft foods for the first few days after surgery is advisable. Here are some ideas on what to eat:

  • Applesauce
  • Soup
  • Smoothies
  • Oatmeal
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt

Enjoy your food at room temperature to avoid irritating your extraction site.

Activities to Avoid

To ensure a smooth recovery, some activities to avoid are:

  • Vigorous exercise for at least 72 hours afterward
  • Smoking cigarettes or drinking through a straw for at least 72 hours afterward to prevent dislodging the blood clot

You should continue your home care routine with daily brushing and flossing. Avoid the extraction site for the first few days, gently cleaning your teeth around the area.
