Dental Crowns Restore Your Smile

Dental crowns are often called "caps" because they cover and surround a damaged tooth to restore it while improving its appearance. We also use dental crowns to anchor a dental bridge, cover a dental implant, or protect a tooth after root canal treatment.

Why We Recommend a Dental Crown

Tooth crowns are versatile restorations because we use them to address numerous dental issues, including:

  • Restore a worn, cracked, or broken tooth
  • Strengthen a tooth with a cavity too large for a filling alone
  • Support a tooth weakened by multiple fillings
  • Protect a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Improve the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth

Dr. Albik will determine if a crown is right for your needs by examining it and taking x-rays. In some cases, an inlay or onlay would be a better choice. He will help you understand your options and explain what's involved, so you feel completely confident about your treatment.

The Benefits of Dental Crowns in Elk Grove

Dentists use dental crowns for various reasons; if your teeth are cracked, eroded, or damaged, this common dental restoration covers your entire tooth. Your dental crown is customized to match your other teeth and will look and feel completely natural. Some of the ways a dental crown can benefit your smile include the following:

Protects a Damaged Tooth

A dental crown covers and protects your tooth if it is cracked or decayed. Also, if you undergo root canal therapy, a crown covers your affected tooth.

Reinforces a Dental Bridge

We use dental crowns on either side of a dental bridge to anchor the restoration and give you a beautiful, functional smile you'll be proud of.

Relieves Dental Discomfort

Whether you have cracked teeth, thinning enamel, or post-filling dental pain, a dental crown can cover your tooth and protect it from exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom-made dental crowns tightly encase severely compromised teeth after a root canal or replace dental function after implant placement following tooth loss. Crowns protect compromised teeth and restore their natural feel and function. In addition, crowns are excellent for restoring the visual appeal of your smile following root canal therapy or tooth loss.

What’s the Lifespan of a Dental Crown?

Though dental crowns are extremely effective and durable, they unfortunately don’t last forever. The good news is that, with proper care and regular dental visits, the need for retreatment or replacement is a matter for the fairly distant future!

The longevity of dental crowns can vary. This is largely based on the material used to fabricate a crown. Here’s a look at different materials used for dental crowns and their lifespans — assuming proper care — before requiring retreatment:

  • Porcelain — 5 to 15 years
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal — 10 to 15 years
  • Ceramic or zirconia — 15 to 20 years, sometimes longer
  • Durable metals (often gold or silver) — Up to 30 years

If you're looking for an Elk Grove dentist with extensive experience precisely placing dental crowns and providing guidance and preventive care to help you maximize their lifespans, contact Dr. Mohamad Taisir Albik and the outstanding Laguna Springs Dental team to schedule a consultation!

A common myth about dental crowns is that their placement is painful or invasive. This could not be further from the truth.

In reality, the procedure is simple, non-invasive, and painless. Thanks to advances in dental technology, dental crown placement involves little to no discomfort. Some individuals do experience mild sensitivity after getting a new crown, but this typically subsides within a few days. In light of the massive benefits crowns provide, this is barely a blip!

The Convenience and Longevity of Dental Crowns

Once securely in place, a dental crown functions exactly like a natural tooth—with no extra care or maintenance needed! Your normal oral hygiene routine—brushing twice a day, flossing after you brush (as much as possible), rinsing with mouthwash, and regular dental visits—is sufficient to keep your dental crowns and the teeth around them in tip-top shape.

Additionally, with proper care, dental crowns are strong and durable restorations. As they’re made from materials like porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, crowns are highly resistant to wear and tear, typically lasting from 10 to 15 years, if not longer, without requiring repair or replacement.

At Laguna Springs Dental, we use ceramic porcelain crowns that are customized to mimic your tooth and match seamlessly with your smile, so they are not noticeable.

A crown is designed to fit over your tooth completely, covering the damaged or decayed tooth fully, which restores both function and aesthetics to your smile.

The Dental Crown Process

It typically takes about two weeks and two appointments at our Elk Grove dental office to restore your tooth with a porcelain crown. Here's the process:

  • Initial evaluation — Our dentists will typically recommend dental crowns for patients with severely broken, decayed, or fractured teeth. They also cover cosmetic imperfections or strengthen a tooth that's had root canal treatment.
  • First appointment — Our dentists take impressions of your tooth to send to the dental lab for making your new tooth. We'll also create a temporary version of your crown for you to wear while waiting for the dental lab to finish. It takes two to three weeks for the dental lab to finish your final restoration.
  • Second appointment — Once your new tooth is finished, you'll return to our dental office in Elk Grove to have it permanently placed and adjusted for fit and function.

The Process for Getting a Dental Crown

Diagram of a dental crown in Elk Grove, CAWhen getting a dental crown, you can expect two visits to our Elk Grove, CA, dental office spaced 2–3 weeks apart. During the first, we will:

  • Numb the tooth and surrounding area to ensure your comfort.
  • Remove the decayed or damaged parts of the tooth.
  • Shape the remaining tooth to make room for the crown to fit properly.
  • Take a digital impression of the tooth to design your crown.
  • Place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth to protect it until the dental lab fabricates your final crown.

It takes about two weeks for the dental lab to customize your new crown. When we receive it, we'll schedule a second appointment that includes the following steps:

  • Remove the temporary
  • Check the fit and color of the final crown
  • Test your bite and make adjustments
  • Secure the crown to the tooth with dental cement

You should care for your crown tooth as you do your natural teeth. Remember, as strong and durable as it is, your restoration can crack or break under excessive force, just like a natural tooth. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that can damage it, and don't chew on ice.

Your crown can last ten years or longer when you brush and floss consistently and visit Laguna Springs Dental for routine checkups and teeth cleanings.

How Dental Bridges Can Help Prevent Further Tooth Loss

An illustration of a dental bridge to prevent tooth loss

Missing a tooth? You might be surprised to learn that leaving that gap untreated can lead to more serious oral health problems in the future. Dental bridges in Elk Grove, CA, offer an effective solution that does more for your smile.

What Happens When You Lose a Tooth?

When you lose ...

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

True to its name, a dental bridge is a restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by "bridging" the gap in your smile. It is made up of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) with crowns on either side to support it. The crowns are placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap to anchor the artificial teeth.

Why It's Important to Replace Missing Teeth

Tooth loss can affect your oral health in several ways:

  • Gum recession
  • Shifting of remaining teeth
  • Increased risk of gum disease
  • Speech problems and difficulty chewing

Missing teeth also affect your confidence because you may feel so self-conscious about the obvious gap that you don't want to smile. Replacing missing teeth with a dental bridge restores oral health, supports a healthy bite, and allows you to smile confidently.

Digital Impressions in Elk Grove

Digital Impressions

Another step we’ve taken to improve your comfort at Fontenot Family Dentistry is using digital impressions. Nobody likes the dreaded pink paste or sitting with a metal tray stuck in your mouth waiting to get a usable impression of your teeth.

With our intraoral scanner, taking an impression is as simple as moving the device over your teeth. The scanner captures a highly-detailed, 3-D virtual model of your teeth that provides more accurate information than we can get with traditional impressions. We use digital impressions for all sorts of treatment planning, such as dental crowns, bridges, implants, veneers, and orthodontic treatment.
