What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant mimics your tooth’s roots and creates a stable foundation for a dental crown, bridge, or denture.
The three parts of the implant process include the following:
- Implant placement — We surgically place a titanium post into your jaw.
- Abutment — Once it heals, we add a connector, called an abutment, to the implant.
- Restoration — To complete the process, we add a custom restoration.
Why Is Bone Grafting Necessary?
You must have sufficient bone density for a dental implant to successfully fuse with your jawbone. However, if you have irreversible bone loss, we may be able to transplant synthetic bone material, bone from your body, or donor bone to increase your jawbone density. In many cases, bone grafting can make it possible for you to undergo a dental implant procedure.
Here’s how bone grafting works:
- First, we will numb your mouth so you won’t feel anything during the procedure.
- Next, we’ll access your jawbone and add bone material to the area that needs it.
- Then, we’ll place a barrier membrane over the bone graft and stitch the area closed.
- It will take several months for your mouth to heal, but we can place your dental implant once it does.
